This note answers three questions about compaction of fill: (1) by what standard can the suitability of fill compaction be judged; (2) when does the difference between an original density test and the repeat check or additional density test become significant; and (3) when does the difference between a lower than average density test and the fill average become significant as it is on this basis that recompaction must be considered? In attempting to answer these three questions and to set criteria, the writer is aware that each fill compaction job presents unique problems; therefore, the guidelines herein may not apply to all situations. It is hoped that this note will stimulate discussion and possible refinement of the data.
