A theoretical study was made to determine the role of material properties and interlock dimensions in the pullout strength of steel sheet piling. Pullout occurs after large plastic rotations and strain hardening develop in the interlocks. A lower-bound analysis including an effective strain-hardening stress was developed and compared with experimental pullout strengths from numerous interlock configurations. Pullout strengths computed with the analysis averaged about 0.96 times the experimental strengths, and the standard deviation of the ratio of computed to experimental strengths was within the range of experimental scatter.
