Abstract: This note describes a method of conducting extension tests under decreasing effective stresses on soft clays without the use of rubber membranes. Particulars of samples, test conditions, and failure stresses are given. Typical stress-strain curves are presented. Examination of test results shows that both types of tests—those with and without rubber membranes—are in general agreement regarding failure stresses, deformations, and pattern of fracture.
