Abstract: It would be most desirable to be able to predict the effect of the roughness from direct measurements of the surface itself by evaluating energy losses in the transition and fully developed turbulent ranges. Here the author describes a method of analysis as a means to classify natural-type roughnesses into definite categories of frictional properties. A parallel but less complete method, independently conceived, has been found to be useful in other fields.
