Coupling of load effects is illustrated herein by considering the probability of failure of an elastic beam-column. For lateral and axial loads with uniform distributions, it is shown that the safety of the members is reduced when compared to the usual method of determining load effects by linearly superimposing the stresses due to the two sources.
