With the desideratum to meet the essential requirements for fender piling by best utilizing prestressed lightweight-aggregate concrete, the writers have advanced rational approaches to (1) the evaluation of kinetic energy due to ship impact, using effective mass of berthing vessels and their approaching velocities; (2) design-energy criteria and energy factor; (3) basic relations of energy absorbing capacities; (4) energy absorbing capacities of prestressed concrete fender piling; (5) optimum prestress; and (6) ultimate energy design, instead of the usual ultimate-strength design, to specifically meet the service conditions of fender piling.
