In the process of performing the triaxial test it is sometimes required to find the amount of lateral strain at various stages of the test or to prevent lateral strain. This note demonstrates how to make physical measurements from entirely outside the confining cylinder, and of as many cross sections as desired by application of photogrammetry or by the use of optical tooling methods.
