Abstract: The state-of-the-art in highway safety hardware, including sign supports, luminaire supports and traffic barriers, has been moving rapidly in the last few years as a result of vigorous research efforts. A compact resume of the most recent safety devices evolving from research is presented. Research agencies active in this area are identified and estimates of level of effort shown in tabular form. The writer's views of the state-of-the-art and futuristic solutions to today's highway hardware safety problems are given. A list of references for most of the devices mentioned is included for those interested in more detail.
