Abstract: The selection of navigation criteria for an interoceanic canal requires the consideration of the charateristics of the shipping which will use the facility and their hydrodynamic interaction with the canal bed and banks and other ships. This paper presents results of an evaluation of the state of knowledge and discusses areas which require additional research for effectiveness in application to design.
