Foundation Compliance Effects on Earthquake Response Spectra

A method is shown to calculate the response-spectrum of earthquakes, for linear structures on an elastic half space. A variety of calculations are presented to illustrate the effect of foundation compliance and energy loss due to seismic wave radiation. It is found that under certain circumstances the interaction between soil and structure can be quite effective in reducing the response of a structure to earthquake excitation. A method is presented to distinguish the cases in which a significant interaction is expected.
