Abstract: The activites of many European and international committees concerned with treatment of structural safety are briefly reviewed and the generally accepted design approach using limit-state concepts is presented. The significance of the various partial safety factors is considered and the recommended orders of magnitude of these are given. Future research to refine the assessment of the partial safety factors is indicated.
