Generating plant fuel demands and climatic factors required unusually large barge-coal unloading rates. Selection of unloading equipment was also influenced substantially by considerations of the impact on the environment. The rotating-bucket-wheel unloader and its associated coal handling equipment are described. The actual performance of the unloader is compared with the design objectives. Specific areas of satisfactory and deficient performance are covered.
