To facilitate the applications of Terzaghi's one-dimensional theory of consolidation, charts showing different initial conditions have been developed so that the settlement at any given time can be easily determined. The purpose herein is to develop one of such charts which may be used by soil engineers to estimate the time rate of settlement if foundations underlaid by two or three layers of clays are encountered in the field.
