Abstract: A long, thick-walled cylinder is subjected to a circumferentially uniform, internal, step-pressure pulse. An approximate formula in terms of elementary functions is developed for the circumferential stress at the inner surface of the cylinder. Results from the approximate formulation are compared with a numerical solution, and the two agree to within a few percent.
