On Acceleration of Barge Tows

The acceleration characteristics of barge tows are investigated by deriving functions for acceleration time and distance based on Howe's estimated resistance and effective-push relations. The use of Howe's functions for this purpose permits the solution of the tow's equation of motion from which the acceleration time and distance functions are obtained. In addition, use of Howe's relations provides acceleration functions applicable to a wide variety of tow and waterway characteristics. Examples of tow acceleration time and distance are given and seem to approximate well actual tow operations.
