Abstract: General solutions are given for the determination of thermal stresses in rectangular plates restrained along one edge or two opposite edges and subjected to uniform heating. The solutions are given first assuming that the normal stress along the restrained edge(s) is zero, and later considering both normal and shear stresses along the restrained edge(s). The stress distribution for these two types of restraint conditions have been compared. For a rectangular plate restrained along an edge, a detailed investigation has been made to study the effects of Poisson's ratio, plane stress, and plane strain assumption on the stress distribution.
