Inelastic Torsional Buckling of H-Columns

The inelastic torsional buckling strength of axially loaded H-columns is studied. The influence of residual stresses on both the torsional and flexural buckling strength of structural steel members are examined. For inelastic torsional buckling, it was necessary for the residual stresses to satisfy one more equilibrium condition than those that are required for the consideration of flexural buckling. When this additional condition is imposed, the well-known reduction in elastic torsional buckling load due to the presence of residual stresses disappears. It was found that the torsional buckling strength depends not only upon the column dimensions, but also upon the yield stress level of the material.
