Optimization, on a weight basis, of round tubes subjected to bending and torsion is evaluated. Closed-form solutions for design parameters D and t of tubes subjected to any specified magnitudes of pure bending or torsional moments are developed, as are general design charts for tubes subjected to combined loading. Results are based on the empirical formulation of simple mathematical strength relations, using data from tests of tubes of 6061-T6 and 7075-T6 aluminum alloys. Examples are included.
