Basic assumptions and criteria for the design of concrete structures in relation to both their collapse and service conditions are examined. Design plastic moments of critical sections can be expressed as some fraction of the corresponding maximum elastic moments, regardless of the adopted basic assumptions. Alternative solutions in relation to serviceability can be obtained, each corresponding to a particular set of accepted limit and serviceability criteria.
