A complementary energy method for buckling is developed for initially straight elastic bars subjected to axial loads. The relationship between the proposed method and other methods in the complementary energy group is examined. In connection with the physical problem under consideration, two other variational formulations are presented. Also, a generalization of the method to arbitrary elastic systems is considered briefly.
