Volume changes occurring in packings of rigid spheres during deformation under both triaxial and plane strain conditions are analyzed theoretically. It is shown that smaller volume changes occur under plane strain conditions for equal axial strain. Experimental data indicate that the result holds true for real soils. The relevance of the result to a study of the strength of soil under high confining pressures is discussed.
