Abstract: A thermodynamic analysis supported by experimental measurements show that electro-osmosis depends fundamentally on the exchange capacity of a soil, water content, and electrolyte concentration of the pore fluid. Electro-osmosis and streaming potential are equivalent phenomena; one can be determined from the other. Guidelines are established for judging the feasibility of electro-osmotic dewatering in soils.
