A brief historical resume of the growth and development of civil engineering is given. Statistical comparisons of civil engineering with engineering generally, other professions in general, the gainfully employed labor force, and the U. S. population for the period 1870-1960 have been made. Certain inferences of vital concern to civil engineering and civil engineers are drawn.
