Abstract: The use and development of a hydrometeorological system designed for operational river forecasting, reservoir regulation, and river-basin management is summarized. Such a system is considered to include: (1) a hydrometeorological observational network; (2) a communications and data processing system; (3) a worldwide weather data and analysis system; (4) a compilation of project operational criteria; (5) a suitable analog or digital mathematical model; and (6) a forecast-operational center. The general requirements, present status, and future needs of such a system are presented.
