A unified treatment of the displacement (stiffness, equilibrium) methods of elastic frame analysis, based on the usual flexural assumptions, is presented. A general equation is derived from kinematic and stiffness considerations, by use of the virtual work principle, expressing the equilibrium requirements of the frame. Based on this equation, the numerical work is performed in a mechanical, tabular form. Relaxation solutions, physical interpretations, and the relationship of the proposed method to the numerous special methods presently used are examined in connection with examples. Matrix formulation is presented in an Appendix.
