Abstract: Tests showed that few fines are produced in placing stone by dropping it into a trickling filter. With stones larger than 2 in. and graded within 0.5 in., 50% void volume could be maintained even at maximum compaction. Any mixture of different-sized stones resulted in a reduction of void volume.
