A review of the Corps of Engineers lock testing program is presented. Results of tests on a wall-culvert side-port system for three sizes of low-lift locks are examined and recommendations are made for the design of this type of filling and emptying system. Data are presented on the performance of this system for lifts of 10 ft to 50 ft and cushion depths of 14 ft to 40 ft. Note is taken of a new (in the United States) hydraulic system for intermediate and high lift locks scheduled to be used in locks on the Alabama River.
