Abstract: Methods are presented for the design of laterally loaded piles. These methods are based on the concepts that the deformations at working loads should not be excessive and that complete collapse of the pile group should not occur even under the most adverse conditions. Lateral deflections have been calculated using a coefficient of subgrade reaction. The ultimate lateral resistance has been determined assuming that either the lateral resistance of the soil or the ultimate strength of the pile section has been exceeded. The proposed design method is illustrated by a numerical example.
