Iterative Limit Analysis for Tall Frames

Abstract: Practical plastic design can be extended to cover tall frames and beam columns by an iterative analysis that takes force-deflection interaction into account. The state of deformation is used herein as the independent variable. The design load is achieved by a trial-and-error method. This approach is most advantageous because it automatically satisfies deformation constraints, and because it involves a new and more simple formulation of the beam-column elements of the structure. A short cut analysis for tall frames also is derived. Application is illustrated by examples of simple and continuous beam columns and a four story frame. The theory is confirmed by a few experimental results and comparison with a computer solution.
