The structural design criteria for extra-high voltage transmission towers is outlined. Alternate configurations are considered in relation to cost factors. Maximum loading conditions are noted, and the application of maximum, or elastic limit, design is examined. The maximum design formulas are presented with related comments on their application. Full scale tower test results are shown and provide design verification. High strength steel was used where costs were favorable. These considerations are all examined to provide the design parameters for the line at the most economical over-all cost. Tower outlines are shown for the final designs that will be used on the initial lines.
