Abstract: This report develops the modpares device for measuring the modulus of passive resistance of soil. In an attempt to determine the moduli of passive resistance of a wide range of types of soil, it was found that the soil modulus was not constant. Because the soil modulus was found to be a function of the conduit deflection, a method of successive trials for predicting conduit deflection using modpares curves are outlined.
