From an analysis of strain gage data obtained by the Association of American Railway Laboratories for simulated highway and railroad crossings by uncased 8 in. and 12 in. pipelines, it was found that stresses due to external loads as well as the interaction effects between pressure and external loads were found to be small. Soil load stresses produced by cyclic loading were fairly high. Comparison of test data with theoretical calculations is encouraging and suggests that refinement to the theory would produce useful results toward establishing a design basis. Analysis of 8 in. pipe data and tests on larger size pipe are recommended.
