Buckling of Circular Arches Under Nonuniform Pressure

Abstract: The equations of an earlier article are applied to the buckling of circular elastic arches under nonuniform pressure. The earlier work used the Winkler-Bach theory of bending to obtain general equations for the behavior of circular arches composed of linearly elastic material. In that paper, the authors formulated an eigenvalue problem for computation of the critical load. The present paper demonstrates that these equations are applicable to nonuniform pressure, provided that the rebuckling deflections are small. A description of how the critical value of a nonuniform load is obtained from known eigenvalues by a supplementary computation is included. The latter is a routine calculation involving only the prebuckling deformation; this is illustrated by an example.
