On the basis of elementary beam theory, a simple formula is derived for the transverse normal (or pinching) stress in a beam. This expression, similar in form to the classic shear stress formula of elementary beam theory, involves only the transverse load acting on the beam and geometrical properties of the beam cross section. These results are then extended to include the self-weight of the beam.
