A review of the land subsidence problem in the Texas Gulf Coast area is presented, together with a discussion of the causes of the subsidence and how the amount may be estimated by soil mechanics methods. The development of fault zones due to regional subsidence is examined and information on how these faults may influence the behavior of bench marks and structures is given. Methods of reducing and controlling subsidence are presented.
