Abstract: Investigation of stability of surface layer of models of granular masses of cylinders or spheres to determine slope of mass of granular solids having importance in calculating stability of earth-fill dams; it is found that in mass composed without stacking faults of identical frictionless cylinders, surface layer will not become unstable until its angle of slope with horizontal becomes 90°.
