Abstract:

Determination of the forces in piles of piers or a group of piles under the action of vertical, horizontal, and bending moment forces is outlined. By use of simplified assumptions and pile displacement, a method is developed for the analysis of load distribution on piles. In a symmetrical pile group, forces are directly calculated, while in an unsymmetrical group the system is first treated as a symmetrical group and then by successive approximations (similar to moment-distribution methods) the forces are determined. A more exact solution for the problem is arrived at by considering the elastic deformation of piles together with the deck.
