Abstract: Cumulative effects of railroad loadings of short duration; wood then exhibits greater strength than when loads are of long sustaining nature; if short load durations are repeated they can accumulate to several years duration; tests show that present concept of cumulative loading time can be revised; live load stresses in trestle stringers may accumulate to less than one year during service life rather than more than 10 yr currently in use.
