In permafrost areas soil supports foundations of structures only if permafrost can be prevented from thawing; use of air vents in foundation slab connected with ventilating stacks to secure necessary heat removal; alternative solution is excavation and backfilling with non frost-susceptible materials; factors influencing soil conditions; illustrations show typical constructions used.
