Abstract: Advantages of tainter gates over vertical lift gates for spillways on Columbia River dams: Bonneville, The Dalles, McNary, and Chief Joseph; stilling basins of such spillways, which are subject to year round use, should be designed with ample proportions; steel lining of concrete high-head conduits in spillways recommended to guard against erosion; chute-flap type spillways are advantageous in narrow valley projects.
