A description of the present doppler satellite positioning system is given along with guidelines on its use for hydrographic surveying operations. Characteristics of several commercially available systems for vessel positioning are listed along with criterion for determining optimum equipment selection. The operational aspects of surveying in remote regions using satellite positioning is considered. Formulas for transforming coordinates from one datum to another are given.
