Abstract: This paper summarizes the physical and biological factors affecting the settling of activated sludge. It provides guidelines for the design of radial flow clarifiers for activated sludge process. The design parameters that are considered include overflow rate, solids loading rate, detention time, side water depth, weir overflow rate, and weir location. Some mechanical details of center-feed and peripheral-feed tanks are also included.
