A survey, conducted in Spring 1978, based upon 179 responses, indicated that 72% of engineering organizations utilize electronic data processing in the management of their organizations. The paper describes the extent of data processing use by type and size of organization, considers the various types of applications, describes the choice between in-house and outside service organizations, reports variations in both input techniques and output presentation, and summarizes the computer hardware used in these organizations.
