Abstract: An electric power system is described and its lifeline function is explained. Effect of past earthquakes on power systems is related. Growth of a large power system, in various stages is described and related to rising standards of seismic design. The influence of operations personnel on the ability of the system to recover from the impact of a great earthquake is emphasized.
