Abstract: A simplified method is presented to predict the longitudinal dispersion coefficient for natural streams. A dimensionless parameter, β, which is the function of the shape of the channel cross section only, is defined. An expression for β for idealized tetragonal cross section is derived. The method is useful in cases where the time and cost limitations do not permit any elaborate field tests.
