Abstract: Pending legislation in the states of California, Florida, Wisconsin, and Iowa dealing with professional licensing requirements has stimulated increased study into programs of continuing education and professional development as a requirement for professional engineer registration renewal. A history of legislative action in this area, followed by a short analysis of engineering societies' studies indicates problems in the areas of acceptable educational programs, costs of administration, inequities for specialized personnel, and legislative uniformity between states regarding multiple state registration. The Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners is reviewing a plan requiring approximately 40/hr/yr of continuing educational development combining formal education, independent study, technical papers, professional society membership, and active professional practice.
