Abstract: A mechanical model is used to provide an analogue for the behavior of a class of structures in which the buckling associated with an interaction between the various possible critical modes, in contrast with the related discrete branching for the same structure, may be highly imperfection sensitive. The model clearly shows the bifurcation characteristics that occur when local and overall critical loads are coincident or nearly coincident, and demonstrates the important effects of various physical approximations on these bifurcation characteristics. The possible misleading estimates of buckling loads based solely on a first-order asymptotic imperfection analysis are examined, and a reduced modulus approach is suggested which, together with the asymptotic results, may provide a simple but effective means of estimating design buckling loads.
