Abstract: The cooling performance of a shallow cooling pond can be determined in a hydraulic model where the residence-time distribution function of a passive tracer is measured at the intake. It is shown that within a range of discharges, i.e., of Reynolds numbers where the flow characteristics in the lake remain similar, the lake performance for a given effluent discharge can be obtained from the results obtained for a different effluent discharge. An example of application of the method is presented.
