Abstract: Prestressing techniques are advantageously applicable to some problems in foundation construction. In North America significant amounts of prestressing are used in tiebacks for temporary or permanent excavations, permanent anchorage into rock of structural foundations, prestressing of foundation mats, and prestressed piling. Recent examples from practice are reviewed with emphasis on the first three categories.
