Abstract: Progression of a study to develop criteria for the evaluation of runway roughness (or unevenness) is traced. An experiment is explained in which two runways are evaluated for roughness using the subjective ratings of airplane pilots and the analysis of the runway surface profiles as measured by the Surface Dynamics Profilometer. A characteristics response frequency of aircraft that use the runways is calculated, combined with information on amplitudes of waves in sections of the runways used, and compared with the pilots' ratings.
